Exterior Work Built for Blaine's Coastline

Blaine sits right on the water at the northern edge of Whatcom County, and that location shapes everything about how a home's exterior ages here. Between Semiahmoo Bay, Drayton Harbor, and the open exposure toward the Strait of Georgia, homes in and around Blaine deal with a combination of salt-laden air, wind-driven rain, and a moss season that can stretch from October well into spring. It's a beautiful place to live, but it's a demanding place to keep a house looking good and staying dry.

We work throughout Ferndale and the surrounding Whatcom County communities, including Blaine, and we've built our whole approach around what actually holds up in this climate — not just what looks good on install day.

What the Coastal Climate Does to a Home's Exterior

Three things stand out when you're this close to the water:

  • Salt air. Airborne salt accelerates corrosion on fasteners, trim, and any metal components, and it can dull or degrade paint finishes faster than in inland areas. Materials and coatings that aren't built for coastal exposure tend to show their age early.
  • Driving rain. Storms off the water often come with real wind behind them, which pushes rain sideways into siding laps, trim joints, and window flashing instead of just running straight down. A siding system that isn't installed with a proper drainage plane and tight flashing details will eventually let that water find its way behind the cladding.
  • A long moss season. Cool, damp, and often shaded conditions for much of the year are ideal for moss and algae growth, especially on north-facing walls, roof valleys, and anywhere airflow is limited. Left unchecked, that growth holds moisture against the building and creates an ongoing maintenance headache.

Wood-based and moisture-sensitive siding products struggle with this combination. Even well-maintained wood or engineered wood siding needs vigilant caulking, painting, and moss treatment to keep water out over the long run — and in a marine climate like Blaine's, that maintenance window is shorter than most homeowners expect.

Why We Install James Hardie Fiber Cement — And Nothing Else

We made a decision a long time ago to install only James Hardie fiber cement siding. We don't install vinyl, LP SmartSide, or wood siding, and we're upfront about why: none of those products hold up to this specific combination of salt, wind-driven rain, and sustained moisture as consistently as fiber cement does when it's installed correctly.

James Hardie siding is non-combustible, doesn't absorb water the way wood-based products do, and holds its shape and profile through the wet-dry cycling that's constant here. The ColorPlus factory finish is baked on under controlled conditions and resists fading and moisture damage far better than field-applied paint, which matters when salt air is working against every coated surface on the house. Hardie also engineers specific product lines (HZ5 and similar) for harsher climate zones, which is exactly the kind of climate-specific engineering a coastal Whatcom County home benefits from.

None of that matters, though, if the installation is sloppy. Correct fiber cement installation means proper flashing at every window and door, a real weather-resistant barrier and drainage plane behind the siding, correct fastening and clearances, and joints sealed the way the manufacturer specifies — not just nailed up and caulked. That's where a lot of siding jobs fail, regardless of the material.

Siding, Roofing, Windows, and Decks — Handled as One System

A home's exterior only works if all its pieces are managing water the same way. We handle siding, roofing, windows, and decks so that flashing, drainage, and trim details are coordinated across the whole building envelope instead of treated as separate projects by separate contractors. On a property exposed to wind-driven rain off the water, that coordination is often the difference between an exterior that sheds water cleanly for decades and one that develops hidden moisture problems behind a wall or under a window.

If you're dealing with moss buildup on a roof, aging or damaged siding, single-pane or leaking windows, or a deck that's taken a beating from the weather, we can look at the whole picture rather than just patching one symptom.

Why a Local Crew Matters

Working this close to the water is different from working a few miles inland, and a crew that's spent time on Whatcom County exteriors knows it — where wind-driven rain tends to hit hardest, which sides of a house need extra attention for moss and shade, and how local permitting and inspection works in this part of the county. That local knowledge shows up in the details: flashing choices, fastener selection, and where we spend extra time sealing a joint that's going to take the brunt of the next storm off the bay.

We're a Ferndale-based crew that works Blaine and the surrounding area regularly, not a company passing through for one job.
